SYNOPSIS
The journey of a man, from the outskirts of civilized life — where he tries to settle, define an existence, build a world for himself — to an ever-elusive elsewhere. Impressions and discoveries come to challenge his identity, triggering a desire and an attempt to escape, not only his surroundings, but the perception of others, and ultimately his own.
STATEMENT
In the Preserve & Whatnot is equal parts filmmaking and performance. Not relying on a traditional script, but rather loosely orchestrated from a series of notes and visual ideas, the project sees the director/filmmaker and the actor/performer — each on their respective side of the lens — engage in a kind of synchronized, unrehearsed, ephemeral ballet, where the preplanned and the spontaneous seamlessly coalesce throughout the course of the capture process. The film, along the unfolding of the protagonist’s journey, explores a string of fundamental concepts: the sense of home, the margin vs. the norm, the innate and acquired aspects of identity, self-awareness, and fate.
