SYNOPSIS
Hélène is packing the contents of her flat. She does so elegantly, meticulously, smuggling her private sense of beauty into the labor. She has managed to tame her solitude, but her belongings provoke recollections, reminders of an unintended past: a child she never thought she could love, a lover she never thought she should find. Her memory is held and drawn in the irreconcilable nature of her two loves. Even after so long, things have not changed: she is haunted and torn beyond mending.
STATEMENT
Solitude and the prospect of death — recurring themes within my work — are at the crux of
A Woman Torn in Half. And as in the vast majority of my film projects, dialogues, here too, are all but absent. Silence, ambient sounds, music and voice overs become tools that allow access to the protagonist’s innermost thoughts and preoccupations. Witnessing from up close the elderly woman’s dilemma up to its conclusion is intended as an invitation to introspection; an opportunity to (re)evaluate one’s own choices, one’s own priorities and to revisit one’s own emotional landscape.
